Toronto, April 1, 2014 – A new study released today reveals that Canadian working women now pull down higher average salaries than their male counterparts. “It’s all part of the Harper Government’s long-standing initiative to raise women up, ensure they have adequate and affordable day care, supporting female business owners and giving them the necessary confidence and funding to be successful,” Harper’s ‘Head of Hooey,’ Sonja Bologna, told the Iqaluit Expositor.

On this April Fools’ Day, it’s obvious the previous paragraph is absolutely apocryphal. The most recent Statistics Canada data shows women make 72 cents on the dollar, compared to men. Industry Canada says the number of women-owned businesses hovers around 17%, and only 35% of self-employed Canadians are female. Why the discrepancy between genders?

Leigh Mitchell, the founder of Women in Biz Network (WIBN), says many women walk away from their business dreams: “The infrastructure doesn’t exist to bolster females in our economy. Even though we have lower rates of unemployment during economic downturns, women are expected to improvise and create our own solutions without help. The astronomical cost of daycare alone creates a chilling effect for mothers who wish to return to the work force.”

Mitchell, a working mother herself, has made her passion profitable by coaching and mentoring entrepreneurs. This month, WIBN hosts its fourth annual conference where working women will develop important skills for sales, time management, and learn “100 ways to grow your business for less than $100.”Kelsey Ramsden, Profit magazine’s Top Female Entrepreneur in 2012 and 2013, will be the opening keynote speaker.

“Your business is only as strong as your network,” says Mitchell.  “Helping female entrepreneurs confidently grow their businesses in smart, measurable, and sustainable ways is what the Women in Biz Conference is all about.”
