Do it now

Get a grip!

I can’t tell you how many times I’m asked “How do you do it Sam? I mean there just isn’t enough time in the day!”. That’s just a load of…..

But don’t get me wrong. I’m self-employed so I get it. I have never worked harder in my life but sitting at a computer all day or running frantically for someone else only leaves me feeling stressed, frustrated and resentful because I couldn’t find “just 30 minutes” for me. Sorry, I don’t buy it. If you have enough time to sit and enjoy your coffee in the morning and read the newspaper cover to cover or chat online to your friends while watching the latest episode of The Bachelor, you have enough time to focus on your health.

It’s just a manner of prioritizing what you’re worth – you know it’s true.

Now I’m sure some of you eat “fairly well” and make wise choices but that’s only half the battle and won’t save you when you have to dash to grab the bus, pick up your (forever) growing child or help your hubby carry a piece of furniture across the room.

Strength and cardiovascular health is important to keep those muscles from slowly wasting away while you blog or deal with the anxiety and stress that comes with meeting a deadline. Just ask any runner. They may have started with a fitness goal in mind but over time it becomes their stress-reliever and antidepressant and can be the one thing to make or break their day.

Face YOUR fitness reality

So instead of saying “there’s just not enough hours in a day”, get over it. There never will be. And if there were, we would just fill it with more “stuff”. Accept that it is what it is and figure out what you’re going to do about it. The first step in doing anything is looking at the big picture – and realizing that there will always be challenges, hurdles and other things to try and derail you from what you really should be doing.

Yes, you “should” be working so you can put food on the table and cooking, cleaning and planning the family’s schedule. But! Devising a few strategies and encouraging help is not for the weak but for the smart. We are encouraged to get help with our work but not ourselves and that always ends up leaving us out with the herd.

Fitness and overall wellness is a “trend” of sorts, for a good reason and it’s no surprise that moms and women in general, suffer the most when it comes to stress related illnesses. Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum or a seasoned veteran, if your “job” is to be all to everyone else, and your health is not up to speed, what good are you to anyone?

A good question to ask, I know.
