“If you are going to run a successful business, you have to be a clear communicator, especially when it comes to talking about money”, says Ilise Benun, founder of Marketing Mentor in her latest book, The Creative Professional’s Guide to MoneyHow to think about it. How to talk about it. How to manage it.

The how-to subtitle covers everything you need to know about the financial side of your business to achieve profitability and to have a “business mind-set” for your success.
The chapters are organized into the three how-to parts, with a progression of steps and worksheets such as “can you pick your ideal clients out of a lineup?
This is not an intimidating guidebook to use and is an easy read.
Also inside is a collection of real stories and quotes from established creative professionals who share their insights about money.
I especially like Ms. Benun’s communication strategies. For instance, she explains what it really means when a client doesn’t want to reveal their budget and what to say in that situation. Another example is how to handle the money conversation with a client if you forgot to talk about it. More communication techniques and answers to problems like these from the author can be found throughout her book.
And by the way, you don’t have to be a creative professional to benefit from reading it.
