It has never been a sadder time in the media – everyday sexual assault victims have come forward in relation to Bill Cosby and Jian Ghomeshi. Each day I wonder how I am going explain the news to my impressionable children.
Then a few days ago we all waited with baited breath to hear the verdict in relation to the Ferguson Trial. After it was heard we watched on CNN and other outlets reactions, outcries and sadness – followed by violence , fires and local businesses being looted and destroyed. More life lost – a young 20 year old man – protestor. A long life ahead of him cut short. A pregnant women loses an eye. Sadness.
It seems that hope is fading. Have we teleported back to the civil right movement days? Why in 2014 do we deal with such unrest? Grandma of the boy killed Deandre Joshua, says the police simply don’t care about his death – because he is black. A fact she says she knows to be true because she has lived their her whole life.
But. There is a but. We see a small glimmer of hope. Natalie who was photographed crying after her bakery is damaged the night of the riots comes to work the next day – devoid of hope – to see that others have already arrived to help clean up the mess. Since then, more than $200,000 of funds have come in to help her fix her store and she has more orders then she can fill for the holidays.
Hope. The business owner greatest asset. Giving up is not an option. It takes a village and Natalie is surrounded by people who want to see her succeed as much, if not more than even Natalie herself does.
Give hope a chance.
