JenLong

Biography

Jennifer Long proudly brings over 15 years of diverse management and marketing experience to every project she tackles.

Hailing from the lush hills of Prince Edward Island, Jennifer is pleased to now call Vancouver home. A graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts, Jennifer has been an entertainer since the age of three! Her first job at age 13 was definitely unusual; at a family friend’s suggestion, she auditioned for (and was subsequently hired to play) the leading character at Canadian World Theme Park in Japan. After pursuing a decade-long professional career in the arts, she decided to focus her talents on the behind-the-scenes world of arts management, including contracts with Canadian Idol, Canada Games, and, most recently, the Vancouver Circus School.

A self-professed “life long learner”, Jennifer holds a variety of post-secondary and continuing studies certifications including Event Management (Holland College), Professional Bookkeeper (Langara College), and is currently completing a Joint Honours in Business Administration and Communication at SFU.

Jennifer founded “The Corporate Canuck” in 2013, realizing that many business owners face a “knowledge gap”- succeeding in many areas, but often requiring a (professional) helping hand in others. The Corporate Canuck’s goal is to streamline the accounting and management needs of small business owners, by offering a variety of professional services that fit THEIR business model. By offering custom-designed solutions for the unique needs of small-business owners, they can focus their energies where it matters most: growing a successful business.

How can your experience or business help fellow conference attendees?

Having experience in high-level management roles, in industries from circuses to software development, my diverse experience can be an asset in areas of financial planning, budgeting, bookkeeping systems, marketing strategy, sales training, and more! I believe these areas are often treated in isolation, without realizing the impact each has on the others. I welcome questions, and love brainstorming.

What are you passionate about in your business and what steps are you taking to make it profitable?

I love that my work is done solely with small business owners- their passion inspires me every day! Much of my “free time” (yes, such a thing can exist to the self-employed!) is currently spent focused on professional development, be it website coding or advanced graphic design. As I am wrapping up my first year in my new business, I am developing additional resources to work directly with small business owners as a coach, consultant, and conference speaker.

What do you hope to take away from the conference?

I am looking to be inspired in my business; to find creative ways to work “on” (not just “in”) my business; to meet women I can look to as mentors; and to enjoy the experience of learning!

What is your favourite business tool?

Wunderlist- I use it every day! I’d feel naked without my to-do list, and this application has all the bells, whistles, and planning tools to keep me organized!

What is your favourite business book?

So many to choose from! “Rework” is always a book I go back to; I think we often get stuck in our approach to “work”, and this book reminds me that there are many ways to approach the task at hand. Short-essay style pieces make it an easy, informative read!
