July 2013 Cover Story in AbuseHurts.Com!communities and within our schools. Coordinated by musical artist, Andrew Cole, it involves the production and distribution of a song called “Do You Think I’m A Joke?” which features a number of music and film industry stars who share Andrew’s passion for this topic.  A film about the making of this project will also be made and distributed with proceeds of both the song and the video going to AbuseHurts.Com (CCAA) to further assist with its anti-bullying activities and services.

The film, “Do You Think I’m A Joke?” is a behind the scenes look into the making of the song with the help of some of the most influential people in music including candid interviews and insights on fear, hope and the human spirit. Bullying, fear and hate are hot button topics that are covered in this film.

Ultimately, it is the power of painful memories and emotional scars that compel these musicians to help out and even to share very personal and sometimes tragic stories. These artists are not doing this for PR, recognition or even royalties. Rather, they too believe in the healing power of music.

While listening to some of the most influential artists share their stories we realize the power of music, and its power to unite people.

The message here is that anything is possible.

The Documentary:

Andrew Cole set out on a mission to bring awareness through a song about bullying, hate and fear but his journey has been anything but smooth. His goal is to get the song recorded by the best musicians in North America, and create a song that echoes the common goal of raising the awareness of bullying. Along the way he hopes to record their personal stories, and how music and the support of others helped them overcome the emotional and physical scars they endured.

Although no one disputes the worthiness of his cause, he doesn’t have the clout to bring his message to the most influential people in the music industry. His journey is a series of endless phone calls, studio stakeouts and last minute flights.

‘Do You Think I’m A Joke?’ is a story about Andrew’s quest, and how his journey to make this song is not only personal, it is also profound. In listening to some of the most famous people in music share their story, Andrew is able to conquer his own demons.

Bullying has to stop.

The Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness is a national, charitable organization that has served Canadians since 1993. The Centre’s mandate is to significantly reduce the incidence and impact of abuse through education and public awareness.CCAA operates solely on private donations with no sustaining funds from any government body.

Abuse is defined as any action which intrudes painfully or harmfully into the physical, psychological or social well-being of another person. The Centre is a national leader in the development of programs to prevent abuse, in advocating for the rights of those who have been abused, and in the creation of survivor-friendly ways of helping abuse victims find healing.

Addressing the issues of adults who were sexually abused as children is perhaps the area for which the Centre is best known.I n 1998, CCAA established the program to address sex scandal at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and is still managing it today.

With help from community and corporate partners, we also provide accessible support, healing and individual empowerment for adult survivors, their families and caregivers.

The CCAA continues to raise awareness about the true cost of neglect and abuse and supports over 130 organizations nationally, including children’s services, victims services, shelters and other agencies that deal with over 200,000 children, women and men whose lives have been affected by abuse.

What We Do and Who We Help:

CCAA offers a full and comprehensive array of program services to address the needs of both child and adult victims of abuse. Our programs give hope to abuse victims whose tragic circumstances and terror-filled lives have left them feeling helpless with nowhere to turn.

Our programs are available t a)Agencies and shelters across Canada that serve and/or house victims. b)Individuals recommended or referred by qualified frontline professionals that work with people who have been severely abused or neglected.

NOTE: The CCAA also refers, to counseling and service agencies, individuals in crisis that contact our office.

How Does CCAA Operate?

CCAA does not depend on or accept ongoing government funding. Our agency relies on the generosity of individual and corporate donors. We are led by a Board of Directors operating in a governance style as well as an Advisory Board.

Martin Kruze Memorial Fund
Martin Kruze was the first male survivor of the Maple Leaf Gardens’ tragedy to step forward and acknowledge the need for awareness around the horrific issue of child abuse. After Martin’s death, in his memory, the CCAA formed an alliance with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Shoppers Drug Mart and the Kruze family and founded the Martin Kruze Memorial Fund, which continues to be in operation today. All monies raised by the CCAA are directed to its programs and services through this fund.
