For Jennifer Gilbert, the love of photography started when she was a child, learning from both her grandmother and father. Naturally Beautiful Photography was born out of her love for capturing the genuine moments and turning them to memories that’ll last forever.
1. Tell us about your business.
Custom family portraiture is something that is special. The memories captured on the day of our photography session are moments that will be cherished for the rest of your life.
Using your home as a backdrop, or a nearby park, I will capture your child in her quiet moments, in his playful moments, giving mom and dad big hugs and kisses, as well as your family just being who you are, in your element.
Whether you are expecting, have a newborn, welcomed a new adopted child into your home, or want to update your family pictures, I will capture those memories for you to have for years to come. I will produce images that you will be proud to hang on your walls, and create albums of the fond memories created during our time together.
Finally, I am introducing Birth Photography as part of my services. Birth Photography is for those that want to document the labour and delivery of their child with tasteful, yet intimate images.
2. Other than being an entrepreneur, who are you? Tell us about yourself.
With my darling and supportive husband, I am the mother of two wonderful children who are always keeping me on my toes. I am continually amazed by my children, and admire how they handle themselves at school and at play.
I love all things Apple and made of chocolate. I’m also a closet Superman fan.
I love to sing, and don’t be surprised if you catch me humming an 90’s tune from time to time, especially something from Bon Jovi.
3. What motivated you to go into business for yourself?
After working in the Human Resources field and obtaining my Certified Human Resources Designation, I felt very disheartened by my profession. I was tired of the office politics and wanted a change. After my contract ended in the early part of 2008, I decided it was time to explore my more creative side. For the first year, I tested the waters of the photography business and found them to be very warm. That is when Naturally Beautiful Photography was born.
4. How do you overcome challenges and obstacles in your business?
Mapping out my time has been a huge help for me. Prioritizing my tasks and asking for help when I need it is necessary. Also, learning to say No is essential. Because I love what I do so much, it’s hard for me to turn down photo session opportunities, but I realize I have to draw the line.
I also have wonderful friends that I can vent to, consult with and enjoy their company.
5. What are your greatest strengths as an entrepreneur?
My honesty and professionalism. I am always upfront with my clients about exactly what I offer. I don’t ever want there to be any surprises, and I don’t ever want a client to feel pressured into ordering something they don’t want. All pricing and information is given when the client books, and I make sure to answer ALL my inquiries promptly and professionally.
6. What are you most passionate about in your business?
Making people smile and feeling relaxed during their photo session, and providing clients with images from their session that will fill their hearts and bring tears of joy to their eyes.
7. What is one piece of helpful advice you would give to other entrepreneurs?
Outsource the stuff you do not like doing. It may not be possible to hire an accounting or marketing person in the beginning, but at some point, the work you do not do well has to be given to someone who can do it well. It will take a huge weight off your chest.
