Knowing and anticipating an upcoming difficulty (like in my case, the graduation of blocks of clients at the same month) or a treatment for an illness or a high pressure interview can be a harrowing prospect. Here’s how I deal with it.

Contingencies

Put plans into place that will take care of things you know will be an issue at the time of the anticipated crisis. For example, if you know you’ll need childcare during your hospital stay or additional income at your clients’ graduation—plan for it.  Practice your speech ahead of time.  Have answers to all uncomfortable interview questions prepped.

Mentally Prepare

Once the groundwork for putting plans in place is handled, there is only your mindset left to deal with.  Visualize believable and positive outcomes for what you want to have happen during this difficult time.  Imagine a comfortable and low pain treatment, visualize the same number of new clients coming into your practice as you’ll be losing or imagine getting that job and acing that speech.

Help Others

The best way to conquer fear of any kind for me is to give to others. Teach others to stop fearing. Stop focusing on yourself and instead look towards the pain of others so that you can help them while forgetting about your own state of anxiety.

The best way to overcome fear is to actually forget about it.
