About Jen: A former student of Women’s Studies at Langara College (among other disciplines), Jen has also spent much time volunteering in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside at the WISH Drop-in Center, a registered non-profit society operated by women for the exclusive use of female survival sex workers, and for the past 8 holiday seasons and counting, has organized the sponsoring of a Xmas hamper for single mothers and their families. Professionally, Jen’s roots are in arts & entertainment, working since 1998 with Canadian music industry pioneers Paul Mercs, Sam Feldman & Associates and then joining the Organizing Committee of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2008 as part of the Cultural Olympiad team. When the 2010 games (and Olympiad) came and went, she spent much time exploring how to fulfill her life’s work purpose, and realized that helping others in various ways was her place in life. After a brief stint learning about British Columbian entrepreneurs with the team at BCIC, Jen recently joined the team at LIFT Philanthropic Partners – a venture philanthropy firm in downtown Vancouver. Jen loves reading, yoga, golfing, hiking with her dog Dexter and is having fun planning her wedding to her best friend & soulmate Martin, to take place in 2012 in New Orleans!

Meredith has 20 years of experience working with small businesses. After graduating from Dalhousie with an MBA she began her career in her family’s business where they manufactured an oil absorbent and sold it all over the world. Today she works with her husband managing PC Service On Site a computer repairs and service company servicing residential and small business clients in Toronto, Barrie and Muskoka.

We’ve been helping businesses for nearly 30 years, and it’s all thanks to a broken typewriter ribbon.
How it all began
In 1985, Staples’ founder Tom Stemberg, a former supermarket chain executive turned entrepreneur, was working on a business proposal over the Fourth of July weekend when his typewriter ribbon broke. Because it was the holiday weekend, local suppliers and stationery stores were closed. After driving from store to store and not finding the correct ribbon, Tom came to a realization: The world needed a supermarket for office products.
Ten months later, Staples, the first office superstore, was open for business. And office supplies became more accessible, and affordable, to all who needed them.
Many things have changed over the past quarter century, from our expanded product selection to our growing number of stores and ways to shop to becoming a truly global company. But one thing has remained the same: Our customers are our priority, and we’re here to help them make more happen, no matter what it is they want to accomplish.
