I was incredibly saddened to hear about the diagnosis of Gord Downie today. My husband relayed the news to me on his way to work. I was shocked.

The Hip music has many amazing memories for me, of my youth, of being proudly Canadian and most memorable for me…. the early days of my romance with my husband Rob.  Memories of late, pointless summer nights and meandering drives, talking about where life would take us.

Life is such a gentle, fragile force we must embrace. Stories like this scare me. They make me feel vulnerable and exposed. But courage comes from facing our immortality and living through our dear ones dying. It brings us closer to being better, kinder individuals who realize we can’t take life for granted, especially, when our loved ones leave us. What does tomorrow bring?  There are no definite answers to that question.  Only hope, courage and conviction to leave a legacy. Here’s to us building that now.

Courage by Tragically Hip

Watch the band through a bunch of dancers
Quickly, follow the unknown, with something more familiar
Quickly, something familiar
Courage, my word it didn’t come it doesn’t matter

Sleepwalk, so fast asleep in a motel
That has the lay of home and piss on all of your background
And piss on all your surroundings
Courage, my word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter
Courage, your word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter
Courage, my word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter
Courage, it couldn’t come at a worse time

There’s no simple explanation
For anything important any of us do
And yeah the human tragedy
Consists in the necessity
Of living with the consequences
Under pressure, under pressure
Courage, my word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter,
Courage, your word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter
Courage, my word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter
Courage, it couldn’t come at a worse time

It couldn’t come at a worse time
It couldn’t come at a worse time
Courage
