#BanBossy - Why women need to find their voice... in their health care and of course there career

When I first saw this campaign I have to admit I was a bit uncomfortable with it. I hate the idea of encouraging people to be rude or pushy for the sake of empowerment and leadership. The stereotype does seem to ring true, women are known for a certain type of aggressive style that can be off putting….. but why? Is it that we are fed up of being called pushy, bitchy, aggressive, sensitive, hysterical? Or is just because we are being firm? Is because our voice raises in a higher tone to show we are serious? I can’t tell you how many times I have defend my voice to my husband). I think men hear our voices differently… I am sure of it.  Like dogs have more sensitive hearing right?

Or is it just because we are passionate?

I am completely shocked that we need a campaign to #BanBossy. Why are we  afraid to raise are voices….   yet I am personally aware when I feel I should be quiet….  I hear the voice inside my head that says…. ” I am going on too much”…. I found this voice in my later thirties.

I do appreciate Amy Poehler thoughts:

“I think the hardest thing is to know what you want, ask for it, and then to stop talking.”

Amy’s comments really hit home for me – the reason being is it is REALLY hard for me to ask for what I want without over explaining. I guess I feel guilty for even asking so I babble.

Great advice that my husband made me aware of……. know what I want, ask for it and don’t waste time over explaining or feeling guilty. My mom has that ability so my hubby will say to me …” What would your mom do?” It helps. My mom is one hell of a confident lady.  She doesn’t waste too much time thinking about what others will think yet she is still 100% kind and helpful so it works.

This is hard for me especially when giving feedback or direction to those I work with. I worry about how they will interpret my instructions. Was I kind enough? Did I come across competent?

Then today I read a study today that said that Canadian Women Waiting Longer in Emergency Rooms for Cardiac Care

Canadian Women wait Longer for Emergency Cardiac Care

WHHHHHHHAAAAAAT?

WHY?

Because they don’t speak up enough and explain with authority THAT THEY NEED HELP NOW!

I have witnessed that with those I love and I am always shocked. Again something my mother always taught me – don’t sit back and let others take control of your VALUABLE HEALTH.

Often we assume women are having panic attacks. Why? Well because women are blamed for overreacting ALL the TIME.

So listen to these lovely girls here on this video for #BANBOSSY and think twice before you speak back. Please ensure you aren’t further perpetuating a stereotype that young girls will internalize:
