Tell us about your business

I am a writer and founder of the indie publishing company Wordsmithy.
I recently self-published a book, a fictional novella called Walking With Walser. I am in the midst of marketing and selling this book.

I also offer editorial services such as feedback, coaching, writing and editing services to wellness businesses. I have worked with yoga teachers, an inventor of a health product, a nutritionist and a life coach, and other solopreneurs who need help creating compelling publications and maintaining a living, breathing online presence for their brand.

I also teach writing in a variety of different settings, both online and in person. I offer reflective writing classes for small groups that combine yoga poses and writing prompts. Wordsmithy’s next publication will probably be a workbook and an online yoga and writing course called Karma Questions. This digital product will include text, video, and interactive worksheets, and it will encapsulate my live yoga and writing classes in an affordable digital program. I hope to also teach Karma Questions as a premium, interactive, 5-day and 40-day course each spring. This is a long-term plan. I think it might take a year? Or more.

I love to write. It’s a solo, creative activity where time melts away and I get to create something from nothing. I also love to edit and produce publications. It’s a group effort, a time-centric, money-centric operation that is detail oriented and fraught with challenge. My life right now is about finding a balance between these two equally satisfying parts of myself and my business.
I love biking, taking photos on the street with my iPhone, walking. I am trying to set up my life and business so I can include these activities, which often include face-to-face time with actual people. Online hours are hours spent sitting at a desk and I am making a conscious effort to include face-to-face activity in my business. Digital life is amazing, but I need face-to-face contact in equal measure.

What are your favourite business tools and books?

I like Wave for accounting, invoicing and tracking expenses.
I also like Simple Tax. That helped me understand and do my own taxes for the first time!

What advice would you give to other business owners?

Step away from the computer! Go for a walk around the block at least once a day. Consider this part of your work.
