Key Note Speaker Profile: Kimberley Seldon, WIBN 2012 Conference

The unofficial version of Kimberley….

1. Tell us about your business.
If it’s interior design related, I’m there. Yes, I am an interior designer and my firm, Kimberley Seldon Design Group, is a design-build, full-service company. Since 2006 I have also been a teacher, helping other interior designers, decorators, stagers, stylists, architects and virtually anyone who works for an hourly fee how to run their businesses more effectively—improving quality of life and making more money. I’m passionate about Business of Design and our online courses site, businessofdesign.com. In addition, we launched Dabblemag.com one year ago as a design-travel-food online magazine and it’s flourishing. And, I’m a frequent TV guest on programs like CityLine. So life is good.

2. Tell us about yourself.
It may be clear from my answer to question number 1 that I love to challenge myself and take risks. This translates just a little bit into my personal life…at least when it comes to travel. Last September, I walked the Camino de Santiago which is a pilgrimage through Spain. We hiked 325 km, uphill and downhill and spent each night in a hostel. I loved it. In fact, I’m planning on a much longer trip through 88 Temples in Japan. Oh yes, and Dabble is sponsoring a team to participate in the Warrior Dash this July. It’s described as 3 1/2 hellish miles through mud and guck and obstacle courses. I guess I like to work hard and play hard.

3. What motivated you to do what you do in business? Was there an “aha” moment or a moment of innovation?
After running my own business for nearly a decade I was not satisfied with where I was at. Financially or emotionally. And, I was unhappy with my client satisfaction rate. I hired a business coach and she changed my life (and my business). I literally rebuilt my business from the ground up and that’s how Business of Design was born.

4. How do you overcome challenges and obstacles in your business?
I used to think I would just work harder or work longer to overcome obstacles. Now I know I can pick up the phone and find a mentor – even if it’s for just one problem – who can catapult me to a new solution. Brilliant. I do not have to do this alone.

5. What are your greatest strengths as an entrepreneur?
I am fearless. I think big. And let’s be honest, I’ve been lucky too. Lucky to have a support group of peers and industry experts who constantly challenge me and teach me new ideas.
